The Splendor of the Spanish Renaissance
including Lobo Missa Maria Magdelene and Guerrero Maria Magdelene
The Choir of St. Luke in the Fields
Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo were leading figures of the Spanish Renaissance. Guerrero, the maestro de capilla at Seville Cathedral, was Lobo’s teacher and mentor. In 1591, Lobo was appointed as Guerrero's assistant, eventually taking his place as director of the choir. Together, they represent the pinnacle of Spanish polyphony. The concert will feature Lobo’s gloriously radiant Missa Maria Magdalene, the ravishing Guerrero motet on which the mass is based and other works by both composers.
